Consec

Consecutive Interpreting

The interpreter is usually located near the speaker and takes notes of the speech; the interpretation is provided immediately after the speech, or part thereof.

Consecutive interpreting is often employed in situations where only two working languages are used for few and rather short speeches. If compared to simultaneous interpreting, this technique involves prolonging the duration of the event itself, as the interpretation begins once the speaker has finished.

Sim

Simultaneous Interpreting

The interpreter renders the speaker’s message into another language in real time, employing a soundproof booth, headphones and a microphone to transmit the interpretation to the audience, who are in turn provided with headphones.

This mode is mainly used for events with two or more working languages. Time is a key element: simultaneous interpreting allows the speakers to deliver their speeches in succession with almost no interruption, and avoids lengthening the event.

Due to the high levels of concentration required, interpreters usually work in teams of two per booth for a seven-hour working day.

Chuchotage

Chuchotage (or Whispered Interpreting)

The interpreter sits close to one or two listeners and whispers the interpretation in real time.

Chuchotage does not require any equipment and is often used in combination with consecutive interpreting – for example, to facilitate the active participation of all the guest speakers.

Trattativa

Liaison Interpreting

The interpreter works with small groups of people and helps them communicate by memorising and delivering only a few sentences at a time.

Liaison interpreting is most commonly used at business meetings, fairs, trade shows and in all the situations in which a swift exchange of information is crucial. No specific equipment is required.

Bidule

Bidule

The interpreter provides real-time interpretation using a portable interpretation system instead of a soundproof booth, making it possible to work in the same room where the event takes place.

This solution is particularly suitable for workshops, factory visits and less formal events involving a limited number of participants.
